Reply:You don't say whether or not you actually tried to download Second Life. I can understand why you might not want to download something. Even on pretty good PCs, some of those games take several hours to download and then you find something went wrong and it's all been for nothing. SO FRUSTRATING!!!

Thankfully, the Second Life download is not that big. You're looking at maybe 5 minutes at most to download and less than 2 to install. Trying to find a name that isn't taken is probably the most time consuming thing about Second Life. At weekends, lots of people are trying to join Second Life. The first time you try to log on, you may repeatedly get a message saying 'Unable to connect to server', or 'Despite our best efforts, something has gone wrong, please try again in a few minutes'. Don't wait a few minutes - just keep trying. You are being sent to one of about 200 Orientation Islands and when they fill up, you have to wait for someone to leave before you can get in - a bit like a telephone queue system. A better option is to join during the working week when there are less people in SL and fewer people are trying to join for the first time.

If you like the look of Second Life, don't be put off by the download aspect. Like I say - quite small. As the browser is updated with new versions regularly, it has to be quick or we would all be in downloading hell most of the time.

Last word of warning. Do not accept any free gifts from anyone unless you have got to know them first. Some are prank items - some are money-draining items. If a blue window pops up saying someone has offered you something, click on the 'discard' button. If it's something intended to genuinely help you the person will speak to you and explain what it was.

Have fun
